Unless you want to put a lot of time or extra money into fixing the potential cooling issues with the heatplate / thermal pads / paste that many find out of the box with AW laptops these days, I'd go with the GT73 or GT75.

@iunlock offers a service (or did) to tune the AW laptops for best performance, maybe he even does MSI laptops too? :)

I think the only difference as of now based on both having equal specs is that

    MSI GT75VR $5899SGD
    CPU:7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7820HK
    Memory: 32GB DDR4-2400 MHz, max 64GB (4 Slots)
LCD Size: 17.3" FHD (1920x1080) Anti-Glare LED backlit
    120Hz 5ms Fast Response Panel
    Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX1080
    HDD (GB): Super Raid 4 512GB SSD (PCIE GEN3 NVMe) + 1TB HDD 7200rpm

    Alienware 17R4 $5299SGD
    CPU:7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7820HK
    Memory: 32GB DDR4-2400 MHz, max 64GB (4 Slots)
    LCD Size:17.3 inch QHD (2560x1440) 120Hz TN AG 400-nits w/ NVIDIA G-SYNC, Enabled with Tobii Eye-tracking 120Hz 5ms Fast Response Panel
    Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX1080
    HDD (GB):512GB SSD (PCIE GEN3 NVMe) + 1TB HDD 7200rpm

QHD vs FHD. 2560x1440 vs 1920x1080...

    and that thermal pasting issue.

The AW really has too many problems, look in the owners threads and see, I can post some if you can find them yourself...it not just a "paste problem", it's a design and implementation issue that requires repadding, bending metal, and re-pasting.

Yup repaste is most likely a must for the 17 r4 but if you can get that cleared away its a beast of a laptop and looks amazing. The metal just feels so good in hand.

I think I’ve decided to go for the GT75VR. Unless Alienware comes out with a new one that fixes these issues which I highly doubt.

Well at that price point you might wanna look at Hidevolution.com that offers LM paste for CPU and Traditional paste for GPU w/ thermal pads and all fixes. All depends on your choice.

Just an update, bit the bullet and didn't want to beat around the bush anymore. I got the MSI GT75VR.

    :)

    Congratulations! :)

Not many have reported here yet about their GT75 experience, no reviews with tuning / OC benchmark results, please do come back and fill us in the good and bad stuff you find :)
