How sturdy is that hinge? Will it survive in a packed travel backpack (and no, not the "regukar" backpack microsoft says) ?

It is as sturdy as any of my other laptop's hinges. That is, the amount of pressure/force it would take to damage the fulcrum hinge would also damage any other ultra-book. It should hold up to being put between books and other backpack junk, but a neoprene sleeve is a must if you are going to though it in a backpack.

Looks like it will. Surface dimensions are: 12.30” x 9.14”

That sleeve is: 13.4" x 9.4"; so there will be room for the pen too.

    I got this case: https://www.sfbags.com/collections/...es/products/microsoft-surface-book-sleevecase

More expensive, but it is neoprene lined, looks great, very well made, small enough to put into a backpack, but also can be used on its own with a pocket to fit the power cord and can have a shoulder strap. Also since its made for the Surface Book, it fits perfectly.

the real question is how many open/closes will that hinge allow for - over the course of a year or two...will it get wobbly
