I purchased a Microsoft Presenter 8000 mouse. It is bluetooth and I am not using the dongle. The software that came with it and the specific version that I downloaded from Microsoft does not allow you to select anything unless you have another Microsoft mouse plugged into it. Even when I do this there is no selection for switching the buttons. I need the Microsoft software so the presenter software wil work. I downloaded Synaptics also and am able to setup so it is left handed. If I go back into the program or reboot the computer it reverts back to right handed and I then have to open up the mouse programs again and select left handed in the Synaptics button selection. Can someone tell me how to hack the registry so left handed is selected by default. I am running windows 7 Ultimate.

Am I correct in my reading that you've only used installed programs for switching the mouse buttons? If so, try changing it in Windows itself:

    -Open Control Panel
-In the search bar, type Mouse
-Click Mouse from the resulting list
-Check the Switch buttons radio box
    -Press OK

There is no switch button radio box. I get the Intelicync window with all the fancy choices but no way to make left the default.

Have you tried clicking enable program specific settings and try using the left hand config for the program itself

I have built in bluetooth and need to use it. The Microsoft Presenter Mouse 8000 comes with a dongle. I can get it to work constantly in lefty mode with the dongle. I prefer not to do this. Thanks for the assistance so far. I might figure a way eventually to make this work.

I'm using the same mouse without the dongle, and can assign just about anything to the different buttons. After a reboot assignments stayed the same.

If he can do it I am sure you are able to do it also. I would uninstall all the drivers for the mouse, reboot run ccleaner with registry fix, reboot again. Then install the drivers one more time. I am using the 4000 and 6000 versions of this mouse and have had none issue like this maybe because I am not using bluetooth but Its the same software just different wireless means.

It works perfect with the dongle in it. Its only problem is it reverts back to default after a reboot. The only problem I can't solve is its insidious ability to go back to default when I do not use the dongle. I have done all the things mentioned. Thanks for the help. I have contacted Microsoft to see if they can help.
