Man .... it's been a while since last time I was in here (~2 years maybe). Not only did I have to do PW recovery, but also the forum does look strange to me, lol, must be a new theme of some sort.

Anyhow, I bet nobody uses T61 laptops anymore .. cough .. besides me ... cough .. But since I made this one so nice I guess there has been no reason really to upgrade, so I'm still on the good old 4:3 T61 in my sig, with the so called defective 140M that's been cranking overclocked for the past like ~7 years, lol.

Obviously I lost track with what's going on with the laptop world. Last I remember talks over the "new" x220 and what not, Sandy bridge being upgraded to Ivy bridge .... nothing worth changing my T61 at the time though, at least for me. And I guess nowadays talk is around what, 5th generation i3/5/7 CPUs already :D

A quick search about what's being produced from Lenovo in the past couple years gives me mixed feelings... For example, I see that the awesome keyboard that I'm typing on right now has not returned ... :( .. bummers ...

So it will take me some time to catch up, but if somebody can post quick milestone update in the laptop world, I'd appreciate it. Besides that, the reason for this post is me trying to see what's available on the market right now in the form of a small (13.3" max I think) and semi powerful laptop. I kind of came over the laptop section in a store while wasting time and saw the current alienware 13 that got me interested though, but have to check what's up with the Lenovo world first, in hopes that quality has not gone to the trash can lately ... lol

Feed me some info people :D

P.S. Still see familiar people in here so that's good :D

    Good to see you back.

I'm still hanging on my T61-based FrankenPads and other ThinkPads with *proper* keyboard, so no you're not alone.

My T61p is still going strong. Don't use it much these days, though.

Not much has been going on in the Lenovo world—they’re still designing ThinkPads for the lowest common denominator and copying Apple where they think it makes sense. http://blog.lenovo.com/en/blog/retro-thinkpad-time-machine/ shows promise though—let’s just hope they get something out before all our legacy ThinkPads die.

hey ajkula66, that citroen hasn't disappeared from your avatar I see, lol.

BinkNR, if that thinkpad in that blog gets in production, I'm getting one for sure. But the way it goes these days I doubt it will see production.

So what laptops do people want these days ? I see we're up to T450 nowadays, the X1 has survived apparently, and dont know what's up with that Yoga thing ... lol. But I need to check the X250 :)

also, dont see anything like 13" W-series .... duhhhh

If I were willing to spend the money, which I am not since I don't use my notebook a lot, I'd probably get the T450s, but it was not available when I bought. The Dell Latitudes E7440 or E7450 from the Dell Outlet offer a ton of value since you can get them dirt cheap. If you don't care about the trackpoint, that's the way I'd go given the three year NBD warranty. The trackpoint on the Dell is frustrating. One minute it seems fine, the next I want to chuck it out the window, but it's a solid notebook.

sadly cant find anything in the current Lenovo line that interests me. Tried typing on one of these Yoga things the other day at Best Buy and didn't like it. Cant even press Alt-F4 easy, LOL.

What's the word about that blog there, they gonna make that laptop in question or not ? And what's the time frame for that ?

... seems like I could be moving to alienware 13 - went to check how comfortable it is to type on it at Frys today, and I can surely say it's not too different than my current T61, for which I'm nicely surprised ... Hope these have battery management software though.

I do like small laptops, and need to be able to run autocad so some decent video card is needed. And I value comfortable typing nonetheless. I'm loving the trackpoint on the T61 so I'm gonna miss it as it looks.

at work I'm using some Dell Precision 6400 or something like that, 17" and horrible keyboard / trackpoint. I looked at these E7450 and that's not going to cut it for me.

ZaZ, I think you're having that 1.7Ghz i3 laptop for long time, right :)

we're having a Dell Latitude D630 here as well that we got at about the same time as my T61 (the 4:3) and it is still in use :D

CPU-wise I see that the current i7-5xxxxU chips are about twice as fast as my T9500 but at ~ half the TDP. Nice. The GTX 960M at stock clocks is over 10 times faster than what I got right now, so I can surely appreciate that, lol.

anybody using AMD APUs? If so, how are these doing? ... say compared to Intels HD graphics ? I bet the CPU part still lags behind. ...

    ---
P.S. My other T61 (wide) will stay however, as this is going to be my home server some day :D

Earlier this year I went from T60p to T450s, everything seems to be faster as expected and the fan doesn't kick in as often. Definitely worth it!
