    Haven’t tried. Did try and render last night on bare skin. Mistake.

    Basically if I disable the DGPU by using an EGPU I should get more headroom on the CPU side. Maxed out fans liquid metal and an undervolt. It may just work. It all depends on where Apple cap the wattage of the 9980hk.

    If you're feeling adventuresome.

    LM
    Case mod for fans
    HS->Thermal Pads->Case mod
    Potentially some heatsinks on the bottom case in the same position and a laptop cooler/fans

    With just LM, you're going to most likely run into the same problem as last gen which was the LM was great for idle/low-med loads, but as soon as you put some meaningful stress
    on the system, the HS would saturate (just quicker with LM) and you would still throttle. This is what at least a few reviewers/YT'ers found (Linus and Snazzy I think as a start).

    Windows is great and all, but I'm always primarily concerned with optimizing MacOS performance.

    Now, LM coupled with some of the above mods would make it interesting.

    As for the heatsink itself:

    Some early reviews have said, side by side, it is definitely louder than the 2019 15.

    So the heatsink gets saturated fast? I know some people added thermal pads onto the heatsink to use the bottom part of the case as an additional heatsink. It makes the bottom hotter but I guess the more thermal mass and surface area, the better

    I did this on my xps and it helped. Changing the Thermal material did a lot too. Adding heat sinks to mosfets in the case of the xps did the most. I am actually worlds satisfied with thermals on the 16, could it be better? Yes. Do I expect it to be better? No. It beats my 8700k water cooled desktop in r20 average at the moment

    Are the VRMs cool on the MacBook?

    I honestly haven’t checked them. But I’m assuming so since it’s package temp that delivers throttling. Once windows is able to be used in bootcamp I’ll investigate its thermal limits much greater.
