    Hello,
I have a Precision M6800 with an i7 4800QM cpu and 8GBs of DDR 3 1600 ram installed. Does anyone know why I am unable to install any new memory that is larger than 8GBs (4 sticks x 2GBs per stick). According to the users manual the M6800 with any i7 cpu with 4 cores can be upgraded to 32GBs of ram. I also looked up the cpu on Intel's website and they too say that this CPU supports up to 32GBs of DDR3 1600 ram. I tried to use 32GBs of Samsung DDR3 1600 ram that was taken out of a Precision M6700 and the M6800 will not post.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Robert

I believe your i7 is a 4800MQ as 4800QM doesn't seem to exist according to the links below:

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007393/processors.html
    https://ark.intel.com/products/75128/Intel-Core-i7-4800MQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz

According to the specs it does support dual channel up to 32GB but limited to DDR3L and LPDDR3.

Are the rams from the M6700 DDR3 or DDR3L? Have a look at the labels of the rams. It should say either PC3-xxx or PC3L-xxx somewhere on it. If it is PC3 (without the L) then u are out of luck. It doesn't work on 4th Gen Intel Core i7 CPUs.

Thanks for your reply, yes I miss typed the CPU number and I the memory is samsung memory but I think it is regular DDR3 not the 3L. I obviously missed the L following the DDR3 when I looked up the CPU on the Intel website. I appreciate your assistance.
