Wow I'm really quite surprised they stock 7970Ms still.

me too:( i kinda wished they gave me something more reliable.

i didn't even have these cards on but used the intel integrated graphics 4000 majority of the time. no difference, these cards died as many mentioned they will regardless which gpu is used and all recommended the extended warranty. i'm glad i paid for it.

got my parts today. 2x 7970s item number 8dg8p one says new build and one is refurb

left heatsink assembly: v4nxk (iasked for these bc they have the thermal pads and TIM stock)
    right heat sink assembly: 8j8tm
    crossfire cable: ryvmn

ok, i'm dialing up mr. fox's teardown vid and i'll post back. i used your video before to install a triple pipe heat sink for the i7

btw, what prob do i use to check temps again (i'll look it up after i finish teardown)

    update:
ok, replaced everything and so far my cards work, hmm i need to do some stress tests.

HWinfo64 is probably the best to check temperatures, you could also use MSI afterburner.

when running bechmark for hitman absolution i'm getting max temps 68C and average 58C
when running GTAIV max settings (max density draw distance, etc,) and running around the city, i'm getting average of 64C

Can you tell me what score your getting with 7970m's in CF in firestrike standard. I have the R9 m290X's and I get right around 8500 it gets posted under the 8970m as I use the latest drivers and that what it get reported as on the 3dmark website. Seems to be right at the top but I notice some higher scores from CF 7970m's.

With my old 7970m setup totally stock in Firestrike I would get 7400 overall score and 9400 GPU score. Overclocked (CPU 4.3Ghz, GPU 975/1525) I managed 8800 overall and 10900 GPU
