Lacking the dvd drive he wishes. I am trying to remember a specific model, 10 inchs, GPS, touch screen, side buttons, full keyboard etc.

    Would be perfect for him

Well, you didn't mention your budget so it's hard to say.

The Asus U2E is an 11.1' with a built in optical drive.
Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 is a 10.6' with a build in optical drive but it has older core due specs (will be cheaper for it if you can get it). There are a few older models ( Asus S6f if I am not mistaken) that will be around 11' with an optical drive.

Alternatively, there are obviously a lot more options in the 12' category. If you are looking for something closer to the UMPC price range, you might be willing to compromise on size for the 7' Kohjinsha SR that includes a DVD drive.

I think there may be some model by LG but I am not familiar with their laptops.

Edit: I forgot the Vaio TZ :) It also offers a DVD drive and is 11.1'

12.1" HP 2530P . Get the one with 1.8" HDD or Intel X18-M SSD, so optical drive is included.
If just want a cheap runaround, consider HP 2510P or NC2400 on ebay, the performance models being the ones with 1.8" 5400rpm HDD or 64GB SSD. Can also replace optical drive with 2.5" HDD if want more storage/speed or even run hybrid SSD+HDD to get the best of both worlds.

12.1" Toshiba Protege R500 or newer R600 also has 7mm optical drive. Very thin & light unit.

Asus will be releasing their 10" 1004DN netbook with a optical drive sometime soon too.
