Lock External HD with Password?

Hi,

I was searching for a program that can lock (encrypt) my external hard drive with a password, but I counldn't find one for free, or atleast popular. I have noticed this feature is already available in Windows but with Windows the files can be unaccessable when encrypted but they are still viewable. Is there any program that will totally lock the hard drive making it unaccessable and unviewable and also comes with password promote? thanks

 

Folder Lock has the ability to lock a external harddrive. I use it.

If you look hard enough, you will be able to find it.

btw... just some advice... if you install any software to add password encryption on your external hdd... make sure you make a backup on other place of the software... cause in case your PC crash or something... then you can still get ur data from the E-HD

 

I don't know if this will help, but you can try TrueCrypt.

 

If you run Windows XP or Vista, you can encrypt the folder on your external hard drive. You don't need any additional software. Be warn, you must make a copy of your private key in case your reformat your hard drive. Without the private key, nobody can access the file and it will be forever lost!!!

 

Make sure you encrypt it, and don't just password lock it. I'd be able to get through the password locks, but not a good encryption.

 

Lock Folder is good, but it only works for within the OS it's install on. Meaning you can still be able to access the external drive from within another OS.

Be careful with encryption software, especially the free ones.

 

Aye. I trust TrueCrypt myself. It's free, but in all senses, as it's open source. It's a very good tool, even if it's not quite as easy to use as FolderLock. But I'd trust it a LOT more.

 

I just installed Folder Lock and tested it on another ext hdd and it worked, then I tried it on my other ext hdd, were I placed all my folders in the locker folder and did a scrambel lock. After I unlock the locker, the files wont return like they are!!! I have 2660 files with scrambelled names!! I tried to lock and unlock them more than once no use!!! Now I have to rename my files... which will take ages...!!! In addition there is no system restore for the ext hdd!
