Only bad for defective laptops ;-) If you have laptop with uneven heatsink surface or uneven pressure caused by improperly mounted heatsink - it's a defect which should be fixed under warranty. If you don't have defective laptop - this should work well.

It depends. Some design are inheritly bad for use with pads.

Maybe, but this doesn't apply to Y740. I believe BOB of All Trades did a video where he used Kryonaut and there was no large difference between it and thicker stock paste. This shows there should be a pretty good contact between heatsink and CPU and GPU.

    Here's the video:

If your connection strenght fluctuates so much - I would first check for driver updates for the card, then I'd make sure that the antenna connectors are connected firmly to the sockets on the card. Sometimes poor physical connection can cause large signal fluctuation.

Personally I’m not a fan of killer cards and would much prefer intel wireless cards. Killer cards seem to run into more problems for whatever reason.

Newer ones are rebranded intel cards, can’t you use intel drivers?

Agreed. The only laptop I would say is superior is the Clevo PB51EF-GPB51EF-G due it having the 2070 Max P as opposed to the Max Q in the 15" form factor. That alongside more ports, an extra M.2 slot, and a larger battery. It is a tad bit thicker and heavier however.
