Yeah when I have a chance to stress it for a while I will. I don't really hear it right now or after fire strike, maybe it gets better as the system warms up/happens only at start up?

    Hi guys,

I successfully flashed the Razer Blade 15's vbios of (90W) TPD on the same 2070 MQ (80W) TDP thats in the Y740 15

Performance gains were pretty amazing and temps were not even any higher but only thing is I lost the functionality of the 2 mini dp... :( which means I couldn't use my g-sync monitor so I reversed back to stock for now.

I think this is because the Razer has only 1 mini dp and my laptop (TongFang 15: PCSpecialist Recoil 2) has 2.

Does the Y740 15 have 1or 2 mini dp ports? and is it 1.3 or 1.4? Because if its the right setup I might have to pick one up, in fact I didnt realise they were releasing this Legion Y740 at such a good price or I would've picked it instead I think and might have to!

Thanks for letting me know! I would IMMENSELY appreciate it.

You think this would squeeze out some more on the 2080mq? I tried to go to Lenovo's website to answer your question, but for some reason the 15" page: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptop...eries/Lenovo-Legion-Y740-15ICHg/p/88GMY701059 isn't loading.

That said, my 17" has only 1 mini dp port. I wouldn't think the 15" has more than the 17".

Yes, the 2070 and 2080 MQ with the 80W TDP are heavily gimped so with the 90W vbios you get a nice 10-15% or more performance. Hardware unboxed did a video denouncing how nvidia is misleading consumers once again with the different max-q variants out there.

Yes I did notice that the 15 Y740 has 1 mini dp, I found a picture of it eventually... so it should work ;)

But now I'm thinking of flashing the 115W vbios of the 17 inch version of my laptop as its the same manufacturer and I will just adjust the clockspeed of the gpu so it doesnt get too toasty. Should work but I'm juts checking that both GPU boards are physically the same because if the 115W GPU bord has a beefier power delivery I could damage my gpu or mobo etc...

My theory is that its much cheaper and simpler to make 1 gpu board design and just limiting the power via firmware (vbios) which I think is what is happening here but I'm just playing it safe and also waiting for a better 230W psu

The lenovo Y740 looks really sweet tho but if I can boost my gpu capabilities I'll be very happy with my Recoil 2 ;)

Could you do me a solid and link me to the vbios or where people are doing this? I would love to get a bit more of performance. I tried some overclocking but everything dies with just a hair of adjustment :( My Firestrike score is about 1000 below what comparible specs are getting! (16k-17K)

edit: in the mean time, I uploaded the stock vbios through GPU-Z https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/208341/208341
I saw the thread on here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/need-help-flashing-2080-max-q.827477/
    Is there more?

    @gthirst

Are you running dual channel ram?

regarding the flashing PM @JRey he did the flash and can tell you what kind of gains he got and how to do it, I explained it to him its really not hard and he has the 90W vbios so he can send it to you.

    Hope it works out, enjoy!

Just in case I checked, and yes it is properly showing as Dual. I'll PM JRey, but I probably won't have time to NVFlash it up until later this weekend.

edit: Can't sleep and procrastinating so did some benches. Aida64 leads to Power Limit Throttling in about 30 seconds. Pushed the XTU undervolt to its limits, seems the max I can get to is -.175v before crashing. Still have power limit throttling. Going to mess with the turbos and get with the throttlestoping :/

Heat spiked to 90C at one point, but quickly dropped back into the high 70s and low 80s. Acceptable, but not ideal.

edit 2: FINALLY. Found a nice sweet spot in Throttle Stop.
To make it easy for people, follow @B0B 's awesome tutorial:
    https://imgur.com/a/XywsJVk
Then, follow these settings on the left, the values under Turbo Ratio Limits. Eliminated both thermal and power limit throttling completely and kept temps under 80C.

A reddit user just told me this model is being recalled due to low quality screens (lol my immediate reaction the moment I turned it on) and perhaps a motherboard issue - but we'll see about that. Obviously, just a rumor from a random redditor atm. (If you're reading this, I respect you but I must remain skeptical until I receive official word! :p)

I uploaded a few minutes of Ray Tracing BFV and am currently Aida64ing for a long, sustained test.

With this current throttlestop profile I'm actually quite happy with the laptop. I haven't even undervolted the gpu or changed the vbios of the gpu yet.

    edit:
Undervolted the gpu and pushed an extra 100mhz out of the gpu. Scores in firestrike are higher in graphics, but lower in combined (considering the lowering of turbo). However, I can get a really decent score in Firestrike if the system is cold and I only undervolt (don't decrease turbo). But, that isn't sustainable and after 2-5 minutes will lead to consistent power throttling. With my current settings I reach 80C after a massive stress test from Aida64. Intel XTU stress test and Firestrike don't even break the 60s. Tomorrow I'll get some nice gameplay and push these overclocks even further.

Thanks for all the info guys!

I heard there was a new version of the Lenovo Vantage software coming - so with that update now there is no custom fan speed controls? That's a big problem for me.

Haven't heard anything about a recall but a lot of people are unhappy with their backlight bleed.

Really interested in more details on the VBIOS modding/upgrading. Back when I worked at ATi/AMD I made some custom VBIOS builds. But it's been awhile :p.

    Thanks,
    Peter

P.S. My RTX2060 Y740 15" order from Feb 3 has now slipped forward from a March delivery date to April... :/

    Hi guys!

I received my 17inch Y740 with 2080 Max-Q yesterday. Overall I am pretty happy with the laptop. The build quality is excellent. After undervolting it for -.155 I got 17353 score in Fire Strike (20181 graphics and 16613 Physics) with Turbo Fan enabled. CPU temperatures maxed at 71c and GPU at 59c. I am going to test it today with some games.
The only big Con for me is the light bleed. It is quite noticeable. I was about to close my eyes on it, as it is the only thing I don't like so far, but it seems that the problem is widespread and as was mentioned in previous post they are thinking about recall... I understand that it is a rumor but still makes me nervous, and that thing about motherboard issue. I hope that its just a rumor, as I really like the machine.
Also would really appreciate the info on Vbios modding. I am also considering doing it, as it seems the GPU could perform much better in this chassis.

    Thanks
