I am about to hit the road travelling for a year and want a large capacity usb hard drive to use with my laptop. I am not worried about speed as this will mainly be used for archiving. But what I do want is portability, the thinner the drive the better.

I was looking at the Seagate 5 TB Backup Plus drive, but this appears a little bulky. Are there any alternative drives that offer this capacity, but in a slimmer form factor? Ideally I don't want to spend much more than the Seagate drive. What would people suggest?

@tommydog sadly there are no alternatives unless you're willing to buy an (much more expensive) SSD.

What about anything in slightly lower capacity?

4 TB is about the largest drive you can get in a reasonably portable form factor. There are lots. Have a look on Best Buy or Amazon.
