I'll start by answering the general questions, but my title speaks for what I'll be going into:

    General Questions

    1) What is your budget?
$2000 + up to another ~100-300 for port replicator

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?

    a. Ultraportable; 12" screen or less
    b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen

    3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Email, database work, scheduling, CAD, watching movies
perhaps some 3D modelling with solidworks

    4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
moving around but I want to use a port replicator / dock and connect my two 19" LCDs and my logitech dinovo bt desktop to it
This dock bit is very important to me as I love my dual display setup.

    5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
    No

    6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
    No preferance

    7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
    minimum 3hr

    8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
    Doesn't matter

    9) What country are you buying this in?
    Canada

    Screen Specifics

    10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
    No preference

    11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?

    Standard
    b. SXGA - 1400x1050 - Compromise resolution between XGA and UXGA.

    Widescreen
    d. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.

    12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
Glossy but if its matte it's not a huge deal

    Build Quality and Design

    13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
    Nope

    14) How long do you want this laptop to last?
    3 years as a minimum

    Notebook Components

    15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
    >40gb

    16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
    no

1GB of Ram as a minimum
No preference to the type of video card used

something like the dell d620 or the hp nc6400 will probably have port replicators...not 100% sure though. also, they have matte screens. also, the toshiba tecra a6 is worth a look...though i don't know if their build quality is as good.

d620 eh? I never thought about looking at the Small business notebooks. opens a whole new set of doors.
going to check some of these out.

the A6 is a bit on the heavy side and the port replicator, while supporting both 1 dvi and 1 vga, costs 300 bucks as opposed ot the dell dock is 130

ThinkPads have a dock that will accept a low profile PCI-E graphics card. If you could find a card with two connectors.

I"ve seen half height cards, but typically you get 1 output and the second one can ba attached via some ribboned connector going to a second half height slot

Does anyone know if the Matrox DualHead2Go would work off of a port replicator?

i don't even think that you need to have a port replicator for the matrox. it seems that you only need a vga port which most notebooks have.
