    I have the strangest problem.
I have a T61 with XP on it, and when lowering the lid to about 20 degrees to the keyboard, it goes into standby instead of when the lid is closed all the way.

    Any thoughts?

That's normal for laptops. It'll either go into standby or monitor off, depending on your power settings, when the lid is even almost closed.

Yeah, there is nothing built into laptops (that I know of anyway) that actually triggers whatever you want your comp to do when the lid actually latches... therefore it just sleeps, hibernates, whatever when it is programmed to think it is close enough...
    It's weird I know. lol >.<

I'm sure there is a small connection that is made when the lid gets lowered enough that initiates the command set in Power Options.

Yeah. Like a hidden button that the base of the lid presses down on when closing. :p

There are physical switches that get depressed by the lid base during closing and there are also some machines with a sensor/magnet in the lid and a sensor/magnet in the body that trigger when they come within a certain distance of each other. In either case, it's not unusual for them to activate early in the closing. I can shut my display off by pulling the lid down to about 45 degrees. I imagine they didn't think many people would try to look at the screen from that position.

My sisters old dell laptop has a little pin type thing that puts it in sleep when you close the lid.

It is fun to walk up and push it when she is using her laptop.

Thanks everyone. Good to know this is not some sort of a hardware problem.
