Since you wrote 51m, I want to give you a heads up on its performance while on battery -- 3dmark TimeSpy scored 2602 on RTX 2070.
3dmark TimeSpy scored 8294 when AC Adapter is plugged in.

Another person with GTX1070 MAX-Q, scored 4652 while on battery.

I'm returning mine because I need mine to still "function" while its unplugged. Good luck finding the right one.

Was actual gaming performance terrible? Could that just be power settings?

It's hard to define terrible... but Apex Legend was playable still. I can feel the choppiness for sure.
