I looked over the CPU guide, which is excellent, but I still have to ask: will I be able to replace an M 540 Celeron with a T7300 in a Vostro 1500 I'm planning to buy?

T7x00 series 800mhz FSB's SHOULD work, although it may vary by northbridge. Compaq C709NR with a T7500 in it, however it appeared to have the 3 gig memory addressing limit that has been mentioned before (4th gig of memory's addressing lines fail, causing memory corruption elsewhere in lower memory (<1 gig?)

That's not necessarily true; they may switch the NB to that fickle GL960 if you choose a low-end processor. Of course the chances that they do that are real slim, but it's still a possibility.

It has a 8600M GT video card, so I'm thinking it comes with a socket P and I should be able to upgrade the CPU.

In that case it will definitely have a PM965 and you will definitely be able to upgrade to a T7300.

I bought that configuration because I already have a T7300 and for the money I spent w/ the Celeron I got the video card and the 9 cell battery. All I have to change is the CPU, memory to 4 GB and the hdd to 160 GB, When I put my hands on a 7200rpm... ;)

I have all these plans and maybe the laptop didn't even got produced. :))

Updated with some new OEM Core 2 Duos and more notes on the GL960.
