In my opinion if you want a fantastic screen with a fast processor and money is not an issue then go for the Dell 8600. If you want to save some cash then go with the 8500, but I'm not sure how much longer Dell will be carrying the 8500 in its line, it will be replaced by the 8600.

    hey abaxter,

you mentioned that you don't think that dell is going to be offerinng their 8500 much longer, how would you qualify that-- for a potential buyer, is there any important pros/cons? you're comment struck me as curious...and i have been leaning towards a dell 8500 or 5150...anythoughts?

or could you recommend and equivalent compter from a different company?

    thanks

    todd

toddy, a Dell Rep named Anne told me last month that the 8500 would be discontinued soon but that there was generally an overlap of 2 months after they've introduced a new product to the line (the 8600) and when they phase out the old one. So just expect the 8500 to disappear soon. I would go with the 8600 over the 5150 if you want a high-end desktop replacement and the ability to have a Centrino chip (5150 does not have that option). The 8600 has a slightly bigger screen and is actually a little lighter than the 5150. However, if the 5150 can be had for much cheaper than the 8600 at any given time I would save some bucks by going with it -- if cost is not a considerationg, go with the 8600.

thanks for the response abaxter. i appreciate your insight.

i guess i phrased part of my question wrong, when i said 'how do you qualify that', i was hoping for some insight as to the pro's and cons in buying a model that may (8500?) that might be going 'out of style'.

    any thoughts guru?

    :)

Hi, I'm also looking to buy a new laptop. I want something with a lot of power. If we compare the 8600 and the 5150 what are the main differences

    5150 got a P4 3GHz processor
    8600 got a Pentium M upto 1.7GHz

does the M have a lot more power than the 4 ? Speeds are more, but does the M give more processing power or something ?

Just want something powerful where I won't have to upgrade for a few years ...

I feel the 5150 is the best but do you recommend any other brands or models ?

    Thanks

    **confused**

    Hello,

I too am a little confused when comparing the 5150 to the 8500. Someone meantioned heat is an issue with the 5150 compared to the 8500. Does anyone have some qualified info and opinions on this?

I compared the specs, and if price between the two was not an issue, which would you select and why?

    Thanks,

    Jerry
