Okay so... I was playing Assassins Creed Blackflag. I had been dealing with the extremely grating and idiotic power throttling issue on my Alienware 17r2 with this particular CPU.

The other day I followed what was said in this thread.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/early-2015-throttling-some-info-id-like-to-share.787044/

I personally undervolted mine to -45 as anymore than that caused crashes once in a while. I also put the TDP to 80w instead of 47 and 58w.

I also undervolted the Intel integrated GPU to -25 and OC'ed my GPU by +110 Mhz by base clock and +270 Mhz for the memory clock.

Naturally I uninstalled that Intel thermal dynamic framework.

While gaming my speed was never below 3.3 Ghz, when I got out of the game I put on my battery profile in Throttlestop to let the CPU relax which is set at its base speed of 2.6 Ghz.

    That's when I spotted this...

Is this a mistake? Obviously that's not even possible right? I didn't overclock the CPU past it's normal turbo boost speed of 3.6 GHz!

If this actually happened should I maybe lower the allowed TDP? That can't be safe if it actually happened.

1 - the CPU in question cannot be overclocked.
2 - 5.8GHz @ 0.98v has NEVER been done on ANY CPU in existence
3 - The AC adapter is still working
4 - the PCB doesn't have a burning red hole in it
5 - the multiplier is read correctly as 36 X

Based on points 1-5, this is a bug in the readings. It's perfectly safe to ignore it.

    Ah okay. Thanks.

By "OC'ing" I mean putting it up to 3.8 GHz btw.

3.8 GHz is only on a single core. The all core turbo is 3.6 GHz.

Correct me if wrong but the defaults for the 4720HQ are 2.6 base, 3.6 single boost, 3.5 dual boost and 3.4 tri/quad boost.

Right, but it has 2 Turbo bins of free OC.

It reverts back to 3.4 after less than 1 minute in my laptop, even after setting those extra 2 bins on all the x1,x2,x3,x4 sliders on XTU.

From what I can see it is the fact it read the bus clock at 165 MHz, using stock multipliers and that bus speed is why it thinks it is running so fast.

Yeah, If you look on the Core Ratios, You can see it’s max 36X:D
