I'm about to pre-order one of these laptops, but I'm a little confused as to which one I should get.

The only difference between them is the processor, so it becomes a question of i5-3210M vs i7-3517U

What are the pros and cons of each processor ? I suspect that the i5-3210M is more powerful because its not a low voltage processor, but if the i7 competes with it fairly well and gives me a nice boost in battery life, I'd rather get the i7.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Both are dual-core processors, so really the only difference is the GHz and voltage. If you're aiming for more battery life, the i7 ULV could be better (depends on the rest of the specs). If all you're doing is basic daily tasks, it doesn't really matter which one you get (would be nice if you filled out the sticky).

It depends what you plan on doing with the laptop. An ULV CPU will provide better battery life, but the harder you push it the more of a performance loss you would see compared to a full-voltage CPU. If it's just web browsing you might not notice or care, but for something like photo editing or video conversion - CPU-intensive tasks - you would be better off with the i5.

Personally I would always go for the full-voltage version unless battery life is a huge priority and you won't have access to a wall socket.

I was actually going to try and use it for lightweight gaming.

Processing wise, they're on the same level. the i7 has better battery life that's really the only difference.

    Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50GHz 3980(score) 222(samples)
    Intel Core i7-3517U @ 1.90GHz 4004(score) 220(samples)

ULV is not as weak as it used to be.

Wow, amazed the ULV i7 beats the standard i5.... wow. 22nm is pretty damn good I guess.

In that case the i7 is far superior because it offers better battery life and performance.

i5-3210M can turbo boost up to 2.9GHz on 2 cores.
i7-3517U can turbo boost up to 2.8GHz on 2 cores.

But realistically, you won't notice a difference of 100MHz on the same family of CPUs (IB, in this case). Subjectively, you probably couldn't tell the difference between an i3 and dual-core i7 when doing daily tasks and gaming.

Sorry, that was my point actually.
    Both perform about on par.

Also, just in case someone might get confused why an i7-3517U with a clock speed of 1.90GHz baseline scored on par with an i5-3210M with a clock speed of 2.50GHz baseline.
