That laptop is a barebone of GX640 if i'm not mistaken. Try looking around for people that have setups with that CPU. A quick search will show that the 450M, which is pretty close to yours, is supported. It's also available on ebay.

The 480m is better. I was just noting what I found equipped on a similar laptop to yours. Although the difference between the 2 is not big, just 0.25 in core speed, so I'd say buy whichever you find more convenient/cheap.

I would buy I7 620M ES (as cheap) or even (if cooling system lets you AND if you have dedicated GPU and do not have or need optimus) quad core I7 820QM.
As I said it depends. IMO there is no need to spend mone on somewhat better CPU from old platform. Only on smth really better which would prolong laptops life on about 2 years more.

I was wrong, yours is MS-1681-ID1 (not a barebone).

But you don't need any drivers, just update the motherboard's bios and it should take the new CPU. Just make sure to have a good thermal paste before you place it.

You can upgrade RAM up to 8gb (2x4gb) and replace the HDD with an SSD. That's as far as you can upgrade it, but if I suggest getting a new laptop if you want to do a major upgrade.

Edit: I agree with James D, you could easily find a cheap i7 620 on ebay.
