When I install this Optibay upside down, the drive has a bit of a gap between the bottom of the laptop and where it is so I secured it with masking tape today.

But do you think I should return it? I paid for the G2, the 9.5mm version with the black border padding and got the 7mm version, same drive just not with the plastic thing on top. I wasn't even aware until I came across the gap issue recently when manhandling the laptop a bit.

Newegg.com - Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MJ080G2XX 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - SSD

Also seeing this, a new SKU that has replaced the G2, 9.5mm version. Any idea?

Nope, no area for screw holes on the optibay.

See the drive I bought was this:

with that black border, it adds 2.5mm, filling the gap. That's why I secured the drive with electrical tape. I didn't even know but there's two SKUs for the same thing:

one with that black border making it 9.5mm and the other, which they erroneously sent me, at 7mm.

Now there's a new drive that replaces the 9.5mm version I purchased, which I sent a link to. But i'm not sure how it's different.

    Deja vu. ;-) Hello again!

What's the SKU of the first drive you bought? I believe there are only two SKUs though. An OEM and a retail SKU which has a 3.5" adapter and of course, a retail box. Thus, the NewEgg link you provided just had G2XX where xx is the 'variable' for G2C1 and G2GC. That's my guess anyway.

odd, the optibay I got had all types of mounting options, including bottom screw holes.

Even if yours doesn't, I'd just make some holes.
