My wife got a brand new HP Vista powered Pavilion DV6000 (6660se) laptop for Christmas. Unfortunately, the thing seems to refuse to connect to many nromal websites like MSN, Microsoft and our IP provider Sympatico. It will happily connect to HP and Yahoo! She has spent most of yesterday on the phone with Sympatico, who says that IE is corrupted, with HP, who said send it back to us, and Microsoft, who said "not our problem, contact HP."

Does anyone have any suggestions before we get UPS to take it back to HP to reload the software, which the Sympatico guy said will not a guarantee it will work any better after they reload the software.

I would try downloading and installing Firefox and/or Opera just to see if it is only IE that is hosed, or if the whole install is hosed.

I would also clear the cache and history in IE and try to connect to those sites again afterwards.

Also, you might try bringing up an old style DOS command prompt box and typing a couple of PING commands to see if it is your ISP's DNS that is hosed. The syntax is ping microsoft.com

Apparently Vista needed some updates that we couldn't download due to Microsoft being a blocked site. Overnight at Future Shop and all is well.
