The machine I'm on right now, the first 8740W, which I bought from a photographer, has Windows 10 Pro running happily. It has the 5000M. My second 8740W with the 7820 has Windows 7 Ultimate running on it. I just would rather have years more of Windows updates as opposed to the January 1 deadline.

I realizes that this thread is not CNN, with breaking news and constant updates, but no one here has any information about possible issues and useful tips regarding the installation of Windows 10?

I upgraded my 8730w from Windows 7 to Windows 10 without problems, so it should work, or what do you mean? Of course anything could happen, so backup your data.

And it could be better to do a clean install and so you can make sure you have UEFI-/GPT-format (just google what is best for a new clean Windows 10 installation)

NVIDIA stopped updating the driver for the 2700m/3700m, I don't know about your 5000m and the ATI 7820 but I guess it is the same so for sure you stuck with old graphics driver, but it would be the same with Windows 7, so this should not be the problem

Long time no see. With Windows 7 support nearing its end and my dislike for Windows 10, I've opted to try Linux on my 8740w. The one thing I'm missing is something to do fan control - Hwinfo64 worked perfectly on the Windows side of the tracks but there doesn't appear to be much similar for Linux. (I'm on Mint 19.1 right now as that's what I had handy for a test, but if gaining fan control means switching distros I'd do it in a heartbeat.) I don't need anything fancy, just something to keep the fan running at full speed all the time since the 920xm will otherwise imitate an electric cooktop, even at idle.

If not, how about a hardware workaround? Would cutting the PWM wire suffice, or would the BIOS freak out and shut the thing off immediately if I did that?

And I'm wondering if anyone on this thread knows about Windows 10 drivers for the ATI 7820.

It would, or it was the tach, can’t recall it. In any case, you can slide it out just by lifting the tab that stops given wire and pull it out. That way you can try which one would give you full blast and still be able to plug it back in if needed.

Regarding Windows 10 and the ATI 7820, if I install windows 10, what will be the immediate effect on my display? In any event, should I download the 7820 driver for 8.1 onto a flash drive, and then install after the windows 10 install?

Driverscape has this driver, supposedly for Windows 10 and the ATI 7820:

    8.911.4.1000
    Release Date: 2012-01-21

Is this just the 8.1 driver, which may be compatible?

If I wind up having to use the 8.1 driver, how do I install it, and prevent Windows Update from over writing it in some way, or will it simply leave the last good driver intact?
