Backlight intensity is not adjustable. You can only adjust the time the lights are on, from 5 sec. up to forever (in BIOS setup).

Thanks, I didn't think anyone still read my question.
And I called HP and they investigated the problem of the keyboard backlight going out when the screen isn't used. They said they can't fix it with a bios fix since the keyboard backlight is directly connected and supplied through the screen backlight.
So I made a script that overlays a black square over the laptop screen. Still has a shine to it, but better than screen off and keyboard off.

I'm checking which HP EliteBook (among 8740w,8760w) gives the possibility to switch off Optimus in the BIOS (need it to simplify GPU-CUDA development under Ubuntu). If any of you having 8740 could check on the BIOS...
I'll be grateful for any help offered! I've already asked this question in many forum, but no answers..

    Bests,

    Martina

I cannot check but as far as I know Optimus isn't supported so no need to turn it on or off

I got my zr24w today. It's very nice, and I'm enjoying the extra work space. But the Dreamcolor on my laptop is much better. The colors are all just deeper. It is also a little odd to have the same resolution at both 17" and 24". Obviously the pixels on the zr24w are larger and you can tell the difference very easily. I plan on using the zr more for AudtoCAD drawings, and my 8740w screen for reading and typing (though the large screen will be nice when I want to kick back and casually browse forums).
