On a side note, does anyone have a suggestion for where I could find 8GB memory sticks that would work in the 8740w? I can't find anything on Amazon or NewEgg. Are they just not made anymore?

Would like to know as well. I might be crazy one day and make this sucker a 16 GB machine!

can't find it either... not that there would be any point in me upgrading it to 32gb, other than to tell people I have a laptop with 32gb ram

    :D

Well, I got mine back with the new panel installed. And the very first thing I noticed as it was booting up (other than it's sooo much faster than my old laptop) is in the upper right corner and down the right edge blacks seem brighter. Perhaps a couple screws are too tight, or something? Has anyone else seen this before?

Next was to run UDPixel and look for dead pixels. And of course, there is one. Attempting to "undead" it now, but frankly, the other issue is a bigger one for me.

    ~sigh~

I assume my only recourse at this point is to get support involved again? This time I'm going to insist on an onsite visit. I am not sending it away for a week again.

(oh, but the color space issue has been resolved, not that it matters if I need another new panel.)

Doesn't HP has a dead pixel policy where one is acceptable and they won't do a panel swap because of it?

I'm not really sure, though I suspect that may be the case. But as I mentioned, the dead pixel isn't the biggest issue for me.

I also just discovered that it appears they forgot a screw when reassembling the switch cover. It's lifting up on the left side near the power switch. I'm certainly capable of going in there and checking it out. But I just don't have time right now (making up for being without it for a week). But my confidence in whoever actually worked on my machine is diminishing rapidly.

The switch panel is held by plastic tabs. The only screws holding it in is the 4 under the battery. If it is flopping loose like a floor board and the 4 screws are intact under the battery, then I have to say that the technician that was doing the repairs broke off one of the tabs. Like what my technician did to my unit, it requires a full switch cover replacement and even possible, full top cover replacement (the cover that has the touchpad and fingerprint scanner).

Does anyone have the number for the onsite service folks (in the US)? I was given the wrong one and am now in voicemail hell trying to get someone to forward me to the right one.

I just want know to when someone will be here. (the rep who set it up was not very helpful).

If anyone knows and could pass it along, thanks!

Nice surprise - my ship date of March 4 moved up to today - so should get the laptop before the weekend. Woot!

Well, I just got mine today, and I gotta say it is amazing looking. The display blows my desktop monitor away. I only have the 1680x1050 on my 8740w, which is the same resolution as my desktop monitor. I can't wait till I get my dual channel pair of ram to put in it, it should speed it up a lot, considering it currently has a single 4gb stick in it.
