I am the (less) proud owner of a HP elite book 8540p (i5 edition). As you may guess the machine is now rather old and slow. I have upgraded the HDD to an SSD but I still want to upgrade the GPU to anything better then the current NVIDIA nvm 5100m. I have very little experience upgrading laptop GPU's, and any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance, Will.

With a machine that old, you would be throwing good money after bad. A refurbished business-grade laptop that’s 1-3 years old can be had from Dell, HP or Lenovo relatively cheap, will have a warranty and run circles around what you have now in terms of performance. You might even be able to carry over the upgraded parts you already have.

Thanks for the recommendation, how much better do you think it would be?

Upgrading to a i7 QM CPU will also make quite a difference.
