I bought a HP Dm1 from Best Buy this summer. The hard drive has made a clicking sound periodically since I bought it. Today all of a sudden the clicking became a lot worse and now the computer says it can't find the hard drive. School starts back up next week and now my computer is not working. What should I do?

    Thanks,

    Tyler

Also, since I didn't purchase the black tie service but am still well within my 1 year warranty period, I'm guessing it's HP I should be contacting and not Best Buy?

Yeah, HP should replace the drive under warranty. If you are comfortable replacing the HDD on your own try and see if you can get the replacement shipped to you. Should be faster but would require some amount of work from you.

sorry this applies to the DM1-4010us. you didnt specify which dm1 model from best buy.

changing the hard drive shouldnt be that difficult. the hard drive is accessible the same way the memory is. Its a little tricky but you remove the power cord and the battery then pull the battery latch while pushing down on the bottom of the bottom panel and forward towards the front of the computer. the whole bottom should slide off. there are no screws. I did this to add memory for my dm1-4010us.

    Tyler,
How did you go with your HD?

I have a similar problem. Below is a paste from my question in a different forum...
    "STRANGE MECHANICAL SOUND!

    Greetings from a new DM1 user ^_^

I powered up my new DM1 for the first time, was going through the setup and heard strange mechanical sounds coming from within... a soft 'clunk', every few seconds to every 5~20 seconds.
To me it sounds like the HD (hard drive) heads returning to the home position.
I can hear the HD spinning continuously (sounds like) so that excludes the chance of power to it beng interrupted - which would force it to spin-down.

In my experience - with many 2.5" laptop HD's (both internal & external_USB), one can distinctly hear separate sounds of HD spin-up/spin-down, the chatter of heads seeking & returning to home.
So like I said, it sounds to me like the HD heads being forced home, and quite often!

Do all other DM1 users experience the same phenomena ?
Or could I have a faulty HD ?"

    Can you relate your experiences?
    Michael.
