silly question but, how do i use notebook optical drive?

i want to plug in a cd drive, and it seems to be a hit-or-miss and it is rather hard to do. yes, i'm succefully plug a cd in, but it seems too hard. i'm afraid of breaking the tray.

is there a trick to it?

I usually put my fingers slightly underneath (wrap around) the tray while pushing the CD down with thumb. Or hold the edges with one hand while using the other hand to push down the CD. I don't usually think about it much. If the CD requires a little bit of additional force, then I somehow find a way to support the tray.

I just push down a little quickly and sharply.

    No CD-tray broken yet.

Well.. my DVD burner's bezel touches the table when it comes out..

    Same as PhoenixFx
Support the edge of the tray with your fingers, when you push the cd down

Same here on my current notebook.

I also spin the disc once it is seated in the tray to check that it is sitting properly.

It's pretty hard to break the optical device if you're careful, it's built the way it is so it should be safe to remove/put it in as you want

I always do that too, just in case!

Great minds think alike. I always spin the disc, it just makes it that much more fun
I am a little confused to how this is "hit and miss"
    can you elaborate.
Is the problem with inserting the cd on the optical drive, or is it the drive being able to read the disc?

the drive center spring is very tough, im afraid of cracking the cd and the cd tray. sometimes the cd wouldnt go in coz the 3 spring would give in and the cd slips towards the side.

unloading the disc is also tricky.

maybe by being rough and quickly and sharply push it down like namaiki suggested will do the trick.
