No it does save it between machines... not sure what your doing..... when you reinstall steam on a new machine you have to load steam once then the next time the program is killed and restarted your lists are shown... and steam backup works fine.... the only thing it doesnt do is compress the data...but thats not a big deal you just press back up and select the games you want... place backup on dvds or external drive....plug in drive on new computer and boom it works..??

Categorizing your games is not transferred between machines. I have Steam on my laptop, desktop, and netbook. I categorize on one, and it's not on the other ones.

Also, try to backup and restore TF2 or Half-Life 2 or any other Valve game solely without any other Valve game installed. It doesn't restore everything. There's like 5-8GB of core files it has to redownload every time.

I have emailed them to remove a game from my account. When I visited India in December 2009, I bought Left 4 Dead 2 there since it was only ~$20. Not bad for a game that came out the month before and was $50 in the U.S!

I emailed the key to my brother and asked him to activate it on my Steam account and it added to my game list.

To my dismay, he couldn't download the game as Steam gave him a region lock error message. When I got back come to the U.S, I couldn't even buy the American version since I already "owned" the game. So I had to ask them to remove it so I could buy the American one instead.

In India though, I could run my American bought games fine, but not vice-versa.

I understand they want to do it to prevent gray-market sales. But I feel bad if someone from India, Russia, Thailand, etc. has a lot of local Steam games and he immigrates to the U.S, Europe, etc. and his games won't work.

Transfer speeds too slow, and just something else to lose or break. :(
