I slipped on some ice and dropped my FX, and the frame near the optical drive is slightly broken. I got the a 3 or 4 year accidental damage plan when I bought the laptop in the summer of 08 and I'd like to check exactly when the warranty expires. I can't figure out how to do that though. Before, Gateway's support site had a place where you could just enter your serial number and it would tell you the exact status of your computer. Now, I can't figure out how to get there. When I tried to register my s/n it said it was already registered, and that was that. Could someone help me out?

When you purchased the accidental damage plan, didn't you get anything in writing? You should be able to look at the written plan that you purchased and see the dates. Now, if you lost that stuff then you may be up a creek.

Thanks! I lost the paper but found the email order confirmation. Here is my plan:

    Portable 3YR Accidental Damage Plan - within 1YR - MB NX/M

I believe that means that the motherboard can only be upgraded within a year? What does NX/M mean?

It sounds like you have the same plan I had, here is the number to call. You will need to have your sn to your laptop, and a copy of your invoice showing the warranty. Do not call the main Gateway number, they will not have a clue what your talking about.

Gateway Extended Service Plan Support (it's actually a third party that bought out the Warranty plan from Gateway when they sold to Acer)
    877-485-1464

If it's the same as mine, and it's non-repairable, they will have compusa call you with a replacement offer, listen to the offer and reject it, the warranty company will call you back and cut you a check for the full purchase amount, minus taxs, shipping and warranty. I paid $1,599.99 for my P-171x fx, they are sending me a check within 10 days. I went through 4 months of bs before this point, they do not have mother boards to replace bad one's so you might get lucky. My warranty was ending in March, I guess I was lucky. Let me know if you need more information, I had a heck of a time just finding this number.

If it's repairable, they may have you send it in to a repair clearinghouse like, Teleplan (800-733-9155) or Barrister (985-365-0400), not a good option, Teleplan, tried to repair my laptop twice costing me two months, the turn a round is one month from ship out to ship back. Barrister sent a Tech to my house to replace the Mother Board (which I told them all along) and my laptop would not even power up, and left out 4 screws.

Good Luck, I hope for you sake it's non-repairable

Thank you very much for the info. My damage is really only cosmetic (although the screen has a problem from before that I'd like to get fixed as well). I'd heard that the RMA turnaround time was awful so I'm planning to wait until the semester is over. Then they can take as long as they want. No motherboard damage so hopefully they just take my computer, fix it, and send it back.

I would call them and setup everything, and make sure you still have time.

What if they demand that I send them the laptop now? I really can't do without it until May.

I would call them and ask to verify your warranty status. They might have you fax your original invoice that shows you paid for the warranty, so they can update their records, this will take a few days. That way it will be ready when you decide to call them. That's what I did, that way you know when your warranty is up too.
