My 5102 has an 8 cell battery and with the wireless on and screen turned down to 0% the battery will last for around 3hrs:5min. However if I have wireless turned off the number is nearer to 3hrs:50mins. Of course when it was new I could get a few more minutes but I have ~7% battery wear on my notebook now after 13months so some loss in battery performance is expected.

2-3 years is the normal lifespan of a battery- regardless of how you use it.

Wonder if anyone has tried running a laptop off a UPS? The reason I ask is I have a two year old who'll grab the cord and send my laptop to the floor. The less than two hours run time off my Aspire isn't nearly enough, and I'd like to use it in our living room that has no safe place to plug it in. My idea is to put a UPS on the dining room table and plug the laptop into that (running off the UPS battery). I'm guessing I'd get many hours off the UPS then the 100 minutes or so off the laptop battery.

Sounds good, I'll give this a try. BTW, google is picking things up quickly nowadays. Did a search to see if anyone else has done this, and my question popped up three down in the search.

It seems that some 5920Gs have very poor batteries...unfortunately!

Well when this lappy was new, the battery life was ~50Min on all the power-save settings...
