7811fx still going... upgraded to 500GB SSD + 1TB HD and Intel T9600 dual core. Gong to 8GB mem resulted in BSOD sos still at 4GB.

After 8 years will finally upgrade to something modern. The 7811FX has outlived my wife's 3 Thinkpads, so the 7811fx was cheaper in the long run.

Was completely floored to see this thread still alive and well. Congrats to all the FX owners for keeping them alive this long. I still miss mine thoroughly albeit mostly for nostalgia. And the beautiful screen. And the unique design.

I wonder who of you would think of this laptop as a sort of spiritual successor to the Gateway FX's. Acer owns Gateway so it's not too much of a stretch:

Mine is still going strong. I could have avoided the Samsung upgrade all together. It was nice on occasion to have the extra CPU grunt though.

I've been using mine for image editing and the occasional gaming. As image files have gotten larger, applying changes to those images takes longer to the point of being a real drag on productivity. But the 7811fx has such a nice display for image editing. But since Dell/Alienware came out with their new Alienware 17 (R4), the old model has been discounted. The Alienware 17 R3 (with the 4k screen) has been ordered and should be shipped today, for about what I paid for the 7811fx eight years ago

Not to worry, though. My wife and son are both interested in taking over the 7811fx.
