    Hi...

Relatively noobish when it comes to modern PC gaming.

I migrated exclusively to consoles mid 2000s. Got fed up with my PC, constant tweaking to get games to run, upgrading etc.

Unfortunately consoles don’t really get many RTS games which were some of my favourite type of games, I do miss them.

So I’m looking to buy a gaming laptop. The reason not a desktop PC being due to living in a flat currently (no room) and have small children.
Laptops are more limited with regard to upgradability — but for the moment it’s far more practical.

    — To be clear, I’m not looking to be mobile with the laptop, I will use it at home, predominantly plugged in as a Desktop replacement. So battery life is not such a big deal.

    — My budget is around £1000-1500.

    — Buying in the UK.

Ultimately I’m willing to spend a bit more if it will get me a laptop that has some decent longevity. One that is powerful enough it will last me a good number of years without quickly becoming obsolete with regard to playing the latest games.

I will predominately be using it to play RTS games, but may play other things and would like at least the option to play AAA games.
Although I will likely get a PS5 at some point for those.

    So games like,

    Total War series
    CoH1&2
    MoW Assault Squad 2
    Bannerlord
    State of Decay 2

    Currently looking at Amazon.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0877M83X3/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_2?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1

HP OMEN 15-dh1010na 15.6 Inch Full HD, 144 Hz Gaming Laptop, Intel Core i7-10750H, 16 GB RAM, 1TB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with Max-Q design (8 GB Dedicated) Graphics, Windows 10 Home

So far it’s the best deal I’ve seen with regard to components and price.

    TOTAL WAR 2
    RECOMMENDED SPEC:
    OS: Windows 7 / 8 (8.1)/ 10 64Bit
    Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-4570 3.20GHz
    Memory: 8 GB RAM
    Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 4GB | AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB @1080p
    DirectX: Version 11
    Storage: 60 GB available space

    It all seems ok.

But ideally I would like to run games like Warhammer Total War 2 smoothly (60fps?) with everything on Ultra settings...

Also — any advice on where to buy from?

Amazon are pretty reasonable price wise and my shopping experience over the years has been pretty good. Even returns on expensive items, given refunds with very little fuss (my wife recently returned an Apple Watch as she didn’t like the colour!).

But a laptop is a little bit more money.

Is it better to buy direct from the Manafacturer? HP? But it is more expensive.

OR are there reputable sites that offer to build custom laptops?

I am also somewhat confused about AMD vs Intel chips. AMD seems to outperform Intel and is cheaper?? So what’s the catch?

Lastly — I am reading that a new wave of next gen laptops are due to be coming out soon (ish?) — should I wait? Will it dramatically change pricing on the mid tier to premium laptops??

Any advice would be much appreciated, as I really don’t want to drop a large sum of money on something that will disappoint.

    Also — as mentioned previously.

if these are right around the corner...

    MSI GP76 Leopard Core i7 16GB 1TB SSD RTX 3070 17.3" Win10 Home Gaming Laptop

    Currently pre-order price is £1799.

that’s a couple of hundred more for a quite dramatic upgrade.

    also —

    ALIENWARE AURORA RYZEN EDITION

    £2,049.00
    £2,068.99
    Save £19.99
    Includes VAT
    Free Delivery
    [IMG]
    AMD Ryzen™ 9 3900XT
    [IMG]
    Windows 10 Home 64bit
    [IMG]
    16GB Dual Channel HyperX™ FURY DDR4 XMP at 2933MHz; up to 64GB
    [IMG]
    NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3070 8GB GDDR6

That may ok due to its size... then just get a monitor and a keyboard.

But still - being able to fold up a laptop and put it away is fairly important at the moment due to space...
