Hi guys hoping you can assist me with making a choice, it can only be a HP product as they are replacing my 2881ap free of charge and these are what they are prepared to exchange for.

they both have 1.7GHz PM, 512RAM, DVD+RW, XP Pro, they both weigh the same

    the nx7010 has
    15.4 WSXGA (1680x1050)
    80 GB hard drive (5400rpm)
    802.11b
graphic, ati radeon 9200 with 64MB
    type II pc card
an external FDD (i am assuming they will give me it as an external multibay, thats what i would ask for anyway)
has 1 year warrantee but i can purchase a 3 year as an extra

    the nc8000 has
    15 inch sxga (1400x1050)
    60 GB (5400)
    802.11 a/b/g
takes typeII and III pc card
    graphic ati radeon 9600 128MB
in addition to dvd+rw it has a internal multibay for extra drives, battery, FDD ect
has better sound and secuity features but they don't bother me much
    has 3 year warrantee
i think it may come with a smart card reader as well

i use my notebook for web browsing both for study and liesure, word proccessing, University work mostly, have only played the occasional movie and don't use it for gaming, i guess i would eventually plug my camera into it and store photos and some basic editing but i still have my PC to work on. also use it to direct a meade telescope (software runs on the NB and points the telescope thats conected to it, to whatever you direct it). i would also like to burn some DVD's

i guess i am having trouble deciding whether the 7010 larger hard drive and wide screen is a big advantage over the 8000's internal multibay and wi-fi a/b/g and other slightly up specs

the 7010 is slightly thinner as well 3.5 cm instead of 4.1 cm not much differance just about 1/4 of an inch

    any help appreciated

    Here's my two cents worth.
    Go for the nx7010.
As you don't play games the drop in GPU (from 9600 down to 9200) will not really effect you, yet the extra sceen space will make movie watching a bit nicer. The only downsides are the 1 year warrantee, if you can get 3 for free this would be a great deal. And the wifi b only. But if you need g you can add this via pc card later.
I personally think the nc8 is a bit chucky looking, and not quite as modern as the nx7. Which is another + for the nx7

From what you said, about intended usage, you probably won't use the extra bells on the nc8.
Oh just missed one thing, I'm assuming the nx7 comes with a DVD+rw as well.
If not maybe the nc8 might be better.

Sorry this wasn't really that helpfull

    yeah tar mate
i am sorta leaning that way myself after reading a few reviews, they comment on the chunky retro look of the nc8 tho they say it feels solid to work on, but they also comment the the touch pad on it needs too much pressure and is a bit of pain to use, i do a lot of word docs so that would bug me, i was/am concerned that with the nx7 wide screen i may lose too much top to bottom viewing of the word doc, but i am guessing i would lose around two or three lines of text? the touch pad on the nx7 seems better and has the touch scroll bit next to it so i guess that makes everyday use easier.

after reading up on wi-fi a/b/g there doesn't seem much advantage to g for me, at home i have b so i would have to upgrade the base to get any benifit and at uni if one other person on the system is using b then everyone else drops back to b as well, sorta long winded lol. on top of that i read that the new standard, coming in next few years will be 802.11i , so no point to worring about changing everything anyhow.

nx7 is missing the multibay which is a down side and as you say the warantee, that will cost me around $300 i think, they won't give it to me for free, i think i have stretched them to the limit lol. i don't think i have done too badly getting a new up to date replacement unit out of them. have to say thus far they their after sales costomer service is not too bad. yeah it does have DVD+RW

    cheers

I would def say go with the nx7010 since you dont' play games get the extra screen area and hard drive space. and 802.11a is pretty much worthless and since you have the infrastructure for b i woudlnt' worry about g.
Good luck with whatever you decide

I personally choose the NC8000 ( The one with 1.4Cent, 40go and 64mo radeon 9600) with the extra accident coverage for the 3 years warranty... IMHO, this "insurance" is really worth it since i'll be often on the go ...

I choose it because it's more a business notebook than a home one and it's exactly what I need ... gigabit lan, 3 spindles design, etc...

But I guess both are nice!
