How would the 7k200 compare to the HD I have now? Would I be able to notice a difference? Lastly, would start-up be quicker? Here's the stats:

    Transfer Rate
    Min: 0.6 MB/sec
    Max: 24.0 MB/sec
    Ave: 15.2 MB/sec

    Access Time: 30.3 ms
    Burst Rate: 63.3 MB/sec
    CPU Usage: 19.8%

Those results are very slow . . . what are the specifications of the hard drive you have? It is either a very slow hard drive or it is in PIO mode.

If it is simply a slow hard drive then you will notice a large difference by going to a 7K200.

A 7k100 should be plenty fast...those numbers are not normal. As Chaz said, PIO mode is a possibility. Your drive might also be failing, but not 100% sure.

It's a 5 year old 4200 rpm. As long as it doesn't fail until after I transfer everything to my new laptop with its 7k200 it's all good. I'm guessing it's just really slow though :p

Lyshen, I noticed you've got the 7K200 in your SZ. I've currently got a 5400rpm drive in mine and have been considering the 7K200 for a while now. Would it be possible for you to do some battery life tests? I'm curious as to whether the battery life would drop or not.

i have seen 7K200 200GB reaches a max 100M/s in M1730 while 7K200 200GB only gets a max 66.5M/s transfer rate in vostro 1400, there is big gap in disk control chip set performance obviously.

I'm pretty confident that the 7K200s in the 1730 are in RAID 0.

Well, I believe the reliability and the 5 years warranty are enough to go for the 7k200.

Regarding to speeding up those results check this out:

I was using a Samsung HM080JI  ... after using UltimateDefrag

    Best regards,

something wrong with your original 7K100 benches as they seem restricted at the beginning of the graph. Here is my benchmark, not the greatest either as I was doing some browsing at the background.

Definately closer in performance to the 7K200...
