My workshop desktop system won't start, the HD activation light is just constantly on and it's doing nothing. Am I right in assuming it's a HD failure?

You should be able to get into the BIOS even if there is no hard drive present or the hard drive is having problems. There you should be able to see what drives are connected.

Perhaps disconnect the drive and then try to start the computer.

If you have an external enclosure, you might try putting the drive in there to see if it's recognized. If so you might have a chance to get any data off of it.

Otherwise, I'm assuming the drive is out of warranty so ...a good 'ol hammer will prevent it from sharing its secrets in the trash.

Thanks Charles, there was nothing of importance on it. I will probably disassemble it and make some cool artwork out of it somehow. I have acquired some new corsair ram too. I have 8gb now, that should be enough to run any programs I need in my shop. I also have 2 500gb drives from my dell laptops. I am going to toss one in it for document storage. I have around 2500 pdf furniture plans saved and need to be available off line if need be.
