I found one locally that is selling one sub $1k, not sure if that is a good deal? I had an Alienware 17 R4 6700hq / gtx 1070 / QHD 120hz gsync which I liked but sold it to buy an XPS 15 4k touchscreen for my wife.

    1. How does 6920hq compare with the current 8/9th gen 6 cores?

    2. How well does the 1080 sli work? Does it do better on dedicated display 4k resolution? Is it true that raising the mxm 1080’s tdp can improve performance almost rtx 2080 like?

    3. Can the screen panel be upgraded?

    Thank you!

1k is much less than the going used price so it is a great deal!
If you don't like it you can resell it here and you should have absolutely no problem to recoup your money.

The CPU is certainly not up to today's standards with regard to both clock speed and number of cores but it should still be good enough to not hamper your gaming that much on most games. If you need more cores or up to 5 GHz overclock you got to look elsewhere. Shame that the GT83 does not have a prema bios and socketed CPU, but this is what happens when you go the BGA cancer route.

The two GTX cards still surpass a single RTX 2080 and they are not that far behind the RTX 2070 when used on their own. Obviously the usual caveats regarding SLI still apply so your satisfaction with such a solution may be a different story even if the SLI setup benches very well.

It is also quite easily servicable with regard to repasting, drives, ram and the battery which may or may not be of importance to you and it is said to have a very nice mechanical keyboard.

As for a 18.4" replacement screen there is one screen available from the Asus GX800 that should be very good except for the refresh rate:

Not sure what adjustments would have to be made for it to fit in the GT83 but this is where I'd look if I came upon that kind of bargain, only that this never happened to me :(

Thank you for your reply! I ended ip buying it for my vr system. 6920hq, 64gb ram, 1tb ssd, 1080 sli. Power bricks are huge! Not sure why they skimped on the screen. Maybe because this was supposed to be a desk relacement.

    That's a VERY good deal!

For a long time there was only one model 18.4" screen available that was also used in the Alienware 18. I am not sure if MSI even had access to the UHD screen at any point in the product cycle.

The problem with bigger notebooks is that there are less 17" screens already than 15" screens and above 17" there were really only 2 18.4" models with 60 Hz screens to choose from last I looked. As of today I am not even sure that both of them are still in production.

I was able to overclock my panel to 96hz, at least thats better than 60

I don’t think yours was a bad deal, i just got lucky. I bet you can overclock your screen as well!

Nice, how did you OC the panel? Do you have any link for the instructions?

That's a nice 60% increase! In case you are still contemplating a screen upgrade to something with higher resolution:

Yeah! Big difference specially when playing! I think im fine with a higher refresh than 4k with a tiny screen hehe. Unless my panel craps outs then i might reconsider
