I know this may seem like a dumb question, but how will the dv6 compare to my desktop with a 9800 gt and a intel core 2 duo 2.2ghz?

I currently have Dragon Age 2 installed but i could install crysis and run the benchmark.

The 6770m is like 50-70% better than your 9800gt and the 2630qm is around 4 times better than your c2d.

Hey im not sure if anyone was having the same annoying problem as me but ill tell you all about it anyway.

I found that when playing games (particually SC2) i would hit the F1 key and it would minimize the game and open the HP help thing. Highly annoying when all you really wanted to do was locate your idle worker.

So i had to change my Fn setting in bios, which was lame cus then my function keys took a bit more effort to use.

But i found a better fix so i could use my function keys properly and disable the F1 help.

Use the information in the following link on the file C:\windows\helppane.exe

Windows 7 – How to Delete Files Protected by TrustedInstaller

If you rename that file to something else, the F1 key wont see the file its looking for, and thus wont come up!

Hope this helps some people as i found this reeeeally annoying

    :D

Hey guys i'm looking at picking up a dv7T Quad Edition with a 2.2 i7 and the HD 6770M but I had a quick question. I have noticed some of you saying starcraft is played at around High settings on this card not ultra but I can play it on my old Nvidia 9600M GT at nearly all ultra when overclocked and mid-high when not overclocked but I thought the HD 6770M would be a way faster card compared to the 9600M GT. Soooo can anyone tell me if they think the upgrade is worth it from a graphics standpoint... I guess my biggest question is just how much better is the 6770M?

My current system specs are listed in sig and the new system is listed at link

    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...w&email_id=2085979&jumpid=in_r329_emailconfig

Note: Laptop Screen 1680X1050, TV Screen (play a lot of my games on it) 1366x768.

Edit: I have to say i've loved the 1680X1050 Brightview Infinity display on the DV5. Wish they had continued it for this DV7tqe... I'm hoping the resolution difference isn't to obvious I will feel boxed in lol.

You are running HP's version of AMD 11.4 for the display driver.
The windows update only provide the driver only, not the CCC.

You have to manually update the CCC.

    3d mark Vantage 9600MGT GPU score: 1100 using gddr2 and 1400 using gddr3
    3d mark Vantage 6770m GPU score:6100

Almost 6 times better and a little overclock helps bring the 6770m at 7000+.
So i guess that there is a substantial gain in performance.

where are you seeing that? at native resolution sc2 should easily getting 30+ fps on ultra. it might dip down a bit if there is a mothership and 14124123 units on the screen, but even then it should stay 20+.

Hmm, I have the site bookmarked at home that I believe I saw it on but who knows maybe I was mistaken if everyone seems to be able to do it :) Thanks for the quick response guys! Also I have considered downgrading but im planning on purchasing an SSD later on for the OS so i've decided to go with the larger size. I just don't have the cash for the ssd option right now =p

Note: Not that it makes a difference but with my GPU overclocked i've been able to reach scores of 1750ish which made me proud =p it wasn't bad for 2-3 years ago and 700 bucks aha. (my normal score without overclock was 1350 gddr2) Still the 6770m seems to be a massive improvement. Thanks!

I tried downloading and installing CCC 11.5 from amd's website and kept getting some sort of hardware not compatible error, after a few Google searches it seems amd's software checks your hardware before it installs new driver/software updates. Is this because AMD doesn't support swicthable graphics and leaves it to HP to provide updates? If so is there a way around it?

Well,I as well got the 11.5a installed and along with it the new catalyst center was installed. What i did to achieve this was to uninstall the ati catalyst manager from the control panel and then use the "driver sweeper" to get any driver remnants deleted(registry entries etc.).Then I installed the HP provided amd drivers and over them installed andaroos' from guru3d 11.5 modified drivers.
Switchable graphics work like it used to.Hope this helps.

I really don't support using the official AMD drivers on Switchable with Intel.
I prefer people to stick with the stock HP drivers until they got a major problem.
If it ain't broke why fix it.
    ----
But did you try to install the CCC while using the AMD card?

    because it is broke...

you have the mouse lag bug on the top right, unoptimized performance, less stability... not to mention new games and programs are coming out all the time, and adjustment to the driver is needed to keep the system compatible with the new software...

Well, blame HP for not releasing newer version.
Please bother them about that :)

It seem the mouse lag on the top right was recently introduced in the 11.5.
Also, newer updates breaks older games, a trade off of being constantly being up to date.
Update only if you need to fix something.

Also the current working HP AMD Driver offered in the update are 11.4.
    8.83.6.2-110412a-117442C-HP (11.4 cause HP's starts at 0)

    i used to play sc2 on ultra settings (reflections/shadows/terrain - high) @ 1366x178

but i couldnt play properly (it got choppy) @ 3v3/4v4 + 100-150 supply, so i gave up and now i also changed the textures to high, and those extra shadows off.

Just pulled the trigger on my dv7tqe. estimated build date June 6th (dang)

    • 2nd generation Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i7-2720QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) w/Turbo Boost up to 3.3 GHz
    • 1GB GDDR5 Radeon(TM) HD 6770M Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 9-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery (over-sized) - Up to 9.5 hours of battery life +++
    • 17.3" diagonal HD+ HP BrightView LED Display (1600 x 900)
    • FREE Upgrade to Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone and HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
    • Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R) with Wireless Display Support

There's the specs. Look good? I figured I could get the i7-2820 (2.3ghz with 8mb cache) but didnt think id see much of a difference if any and it cost 200 bucks so I just upgraded the ram from 6 to 8. Later on down the road I will toss an SSD in when I have the money and put the OS on it.

Anyone who has the dv7tqe have any tips or tricks for when I get it?

Edit: Meant to post this in the main thread not the gaming thread. Sooo it's in both. =p
