Military Rations of the World by PresidianVox

So, why military rations? First, I am currently serving in the military, so I've had my share of rations in the field - some good, some bad. A few months back, I was surfing on Youtube and found some videos of rations from other countries being opened up and reviewed (Kiwi Dude and Steve1989 do some pretty good videos of rare and hard-to-find rations). It motivated me to try a few of them myself. Military rations are a relatively modern concept. Historically, an army marched on its stomach, and ate whatever they could find. It wasn't until the era of Napoleon Bonaparte's Grand Army that a need for long-term preservation of everyday foods prompted the invention of 'canning' by Nicolas Appert. In the 19th century, British military tinned rations were sealed with lead solder, which led to cases of lead poisoning. The modern concept of an individual military ration began in 1941 with the introduction of the American K-ration, which saw widespread use throughout World War 2. Today, nearly every nation in the world produces their own distinct varieties of the military ration. I find them interesting because they contain a compact (and edible) glimpse of the eating habits and culture of their host nations, from the simple rice-and-meat rations of China, Korea and Japan, to the (relatively) gourmet menus of France, Italy and Spain, to the culturally and ethnically diverse menus of Britain and the USA. For those interested in learning new languages, there are several staples that can be found in most nations' rations, such as sugar, tea, matches, gum, and of course, coffee. Over the next week or two, I plan to do several more of these posts, featuring rations from countries like France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Canada, the USA, and Russia. Have a great day!
