Just to shed a lot of light on this topic.
I have a Santa Rosa platform that is PM965. I've installed a 1066MHz CPU and modded just 1 pin of PM965 to make it think it's working with a 800MHz. Now my PM965 is working at 1066 fine, no problem. My idea is that any chipset that officially supports 800MHz CPUs can work at 1066 as well. So I think this topic on downclock for Santa Rosa and Montevina platforms is useless already:)

So wait, I break off one pin on a X9100 and that allows me to run a cheap Extreme Edition CPU in my M4300?

    What's your laptop?
My HP HDX9000 is running X9100 fine, so your M4300 should work be working fine too. But you will have to get a 800MHz RAM stick first, if you don't have it yet. What is your config now?

[/ QUOTE]

Your chipset is GL40. FSB:RAM divider now is 1:2. You will have to buy 1066 RAM to make it work because of the divider.
Do you have schematics for your laptop? I tried to find it, but no success.

DDR2-667 with 800 CL3 timings flashed with SPDTool, so it should work in theory.

    FYI Precision M4300 = Latitude D830
