Bump for triturbo's having done a great job posting info about graphics on the 8740w. Half-tempted by the 6970 myself, even though I only have one game where I'd be able to notice a benefit from it.

Thinking of getting a cheap 8740w for a friend, would the 6970m work on it?

Requires some heat-sink grinding and the fan control is manual - you have to control it.

The grinding is trivial with a good dremel i guess, but i dont know if he'll agree with the manual fan control. Manual as in software or hardware(power from usb)? Seems tempting though. Hey triturbo, is there a thread where i can find the full sum of information that we got on the 8740w/8540w and mxm upgrades? I bought an 8540w for a friend last year and i am thinking of dropping a m4000(dell with vbios) on it, but all info i can find is from chinese forums(and i dont really get google translated chinese). Regards.

Yes, the grinding is like half an hour tops. As in software, correct - HWInfo. An external temp sensor and fan control unit can do as well. I've made a guide for 8740w here.

You need an unlocked system BIOS and change the settings to prefer Legacy ROM. Still can't give you guarantee that it would work. It's up to you.
