The the price difference is for the solid state hard drive. These cost a a lot, and apple tends to charge a premium for those.

Personally I would look at the new macbook pro 13", its a bit heavier and thicker, but its 10h battery life and far superior performance make it a better choice for your needs. Its also cheaper.

I say go with the 13in Pro, its still light (4.5lbs) and you get an optical drive, another USB port, built in network port, a better GPU and better CPU, more battery life, and an SD card reader.

The AIR can do programming, but it will be much slower than the 13in Pro or even the regular MacBook.

I wouldn't recommend the macbook air to anyone at this point. It's definitely dated and old. And there are rumors Apple will be dropping it completely.

for a portable mac... the 13" Macbook Pro blows away the Macbook Air... no reason to even consider the Air.

just make sure you get one of he newer Macbook Pro 13" that has the geforce 320m, and 10 hours of battery life. Some of the stores are trying to get rid of old stock o the 13"s that had geforce 9400s. still a good machine, but only at a really cheap price, when usually they are selling the newer ons within $50 to the same exact price.

being a student, you can get a student pricing on the entry level Macbook Pro 13" for $1099 (in the US)
