    I don't know that you can get it under $600, but maybe a Vostro 1400/1500 with a 9-cell battery. You can configure with XP, and probably get under $700 - and if you find a coupon/discount, you'll be in good shape. =^)

    Consider the 15.4 inch Sony Vaio NR series, which is available at OfficeDepot for $499.99 after a $150 rebate. It has Vista though.
