Thank God! My prayers are answered! Finally a laptop with the i9 8950hk under $2000! :)

Now onto the people that have owned a similar model. How's the cooling?
The i9 is as good as the cooling of the laptop and this one doesn't look too shabby.

    Thoughts? Please share!

Dunno if metabox comes from same OEM family, but this could be related

They are not related. The PA70 is a Clevo, the Mech 17 is TongFang.

Yeah, you are looking at these two models: Tsinghua Tongfang GK7CN6S vs Clevo PA71EP6-G
It seems my prices for the Mech 17 are all messed up, will update them later today.

They are very different machines, and the Mech offers excellent cooling and overall build quality. It's better than the Clevo.
If you configure both laptops with similar components, you get very similar prices, but the Clevo doesn't come with the i9, I think only Eurocom sells it with the i9.

The Mech 17 is superior in some ways to the PA70/71. It is smaller, has a mechanical keyboard, and likely has better thermals. But the PA70/71 is available with the 1060 or 1070 and includes G-SYNC, whereas the Tongfang (Mech 17) has Optimus instead. There is not a great wealth of information yet about the Tongfang model, but you can read more about it here.

Assuming you are in the US, Cyberpowerpc also carries the same Tongfang chassis with an 8950HK, though Eluktronics has superior support.

My personal opinion is that the i9 is not worth the price premium in a thin mobile device, but I realize there may be a legitimate need for it.

Not really much of an advantage since that system can't fully support the i9's power draw and heat.

As long as I'm breaking 1350-1400 on Cinbench r15 multicore, It's worth it for me (especially for relatively small price differential).

I'm hoping this price difference will be even smaller given the extra stock in processor hardware going on and continuing through first two quarters of 2019. (God willing).

8950HK doesn't make any sense. It's just a waste of money for this unit, since you still can't pass 45W PL1 in combined stress and 55W under CPU-only stress.

Is that because of the power brick or bios watt limit?
