Just wondering if it matters what brand wireless router I get? Will an Intel card play well with a D-link or Linksys or Buffalo? I have an Intel N card. I have an old G router that I'd like to replace with an N router.

Mileage varies greatly in routers, from what I hear. But I haven't had any problems whatsoever from Linksys or Asus (connecting to both intel and atheros wireless), but a Belkin gave me fits. (All were G band)

If you enjoy tinkering and modding things, loading up a Linksys with some open-source firmware yields some fantastic results. But the default is more than sufficient.

The card in your laptop is more likely to now be the limiting factor.
