My work laptop (macbook pro) allows me to close it and tuck it behind the monitors while plugged in.

However, my home laptop (currently older asus rog) doesn't do that - I need to keep the laptop open for it to register with the monitor... any suggestions for fixing?

I wouldn't recommend using your computer with the lid closed, especially if you're doing something strenuous. Many laptops vent air through the keyboard so closing that off will have an adverse impact on temperatures.
