    I have an r3 with a 580M. I always run on AC power.Is it ok to disable the Internal Graphics Device in the BIOS so you're always using the 580 instead of whitelisting?

    Of course it is. Using the unlocked version of BIOS A08 (or A04), go to (second) Advanced>Video Configuration, and change Primary Display from SG to PEG, then click on Internal Graphics Device, then IGD again and change from Enabled to Disabled. Save and exit, and you are running a 580M only setup. Works very well.

    I think I did that a while back,disabled IGD then enabled PEG and then it wouldn't reboot. I had to remove Bios battery to put all settings back to default.

    If so, my friend, you did it wrong. I have switched to the 580M exclusively and back to Optimus any number of times. I'm not guessing. That's how you do it, and it works perfectly every time.

    I apologize if my response seemed rude. Probably was. But I'm not going to advise a course of action that will brick his notebook or hipshoot a response just to see myself post. Guess I shouldn't post at all on difficult days. :eek: :eek:

    I'm assuming it's the same procedure for the 460M?

    ok, got my computer working on discrete graphics only; side effect is that my backlight (screen brightness) is VERY low, at this current max screen brightness setting it is barely as bright as the lowest bright setting it used to be before disabling the igd... anyone know how to fix this?

    That is not a normal result of using the discrete card only, at least with a 580M. I have found it necessary on occasion to reinstall the 580M display drivers after switching to discrete graphics (or back to Optimus) to smooth out any glitches resulting from the reconfiguration. You might try that (not necessary to remove all prior drivers or sweep, etc; just remove and reinstall the display driver). Best of luck.

    I did exactly the process Revelator described in his earlier post and when I rebooted the screen was darker than usual and had an orange tint.Uninstalled and reinstalled 295.51 drivers, no change.Switched back to normal profile;SG and IGD on Auto and it's working properly.

    Then perhaps this particular option -- using only the discrete graphics card when desired -- is beyond your control. I beg your forgiveness for suggesting that you too could enjoy benefits enjoyed by other users and wish you the greatest success in your future endeavors.

    @Wiseguy Semper fi again?

    But yeah, the switching ain't as easy as it was with the 6990M. I don't understand why Nvidia can't just allow a manual switching option, as well as their automatic one

    However what Rev said worked perfectly fine for me. Windows would quickly pick-up the change and install the drivers.

    So I finally took the leap and disabled the IGD with the unlocked BIOS. While it seems to have worked, I've noticed a few things and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing.

    I've opted for a no GUI boot since it shaves a few seconds off my boot time. Since disabling the IGD I've noticed 8 teal colored dashes/dots in the upper left corner of the screen while booting up; they show up when the Windows loading logo normally comes up (screen is blank on mine).

    Second thing I've noticed since disabling IGD is that when the Windows log in screen comes up, the screen will flash 3 times. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that I have an external monitor hooked up via VGA as the monitor will power up when the log in screen pops up. However this never happened when IGD was enabled.

    Like I said, I'm just wondering if this is something you guys have experienced or if this is unique to my machine. Specs in my sig.

    Thanks!
