    Hi everyone,

    Been awhile since I frequented the forums or indeed modded an inf! I recently had the opportunity to pick up a rare 980M 4GB mxm (MSI gsync) card to play with in my ancient M15x. I had been after one of these for a while as they are easier to cool and less power hungry than the 8GB common version.

    It installed without a hitch and gets into windows no problem. I proceeded to download the latest 430.86 driver for windows 7 64 bit and modded the nv_dispi.inf file with the gpu hardware ID as per an online guide here I also found this guide that seems to follow a more modern and different process to mod the nvdmi.inf file for Alienware machines. It seems however this is more for windows 10 machines. I modded it anyway.

    The driver software started fine and recognised the GPU. I began the install the drivers. About 20 seconds into the installation windows asks whether I really want to install non verified drivers and click yes and then 20 seconds later the installation fails.

    Any ideas, tips and guidance would be much appreciated! Here is a screenshot of the GPU ID below:

    Thanks everyone!!

    Did you disable driver signature enforcement? Also hardware i.d and a clean nvmii.inf file link and your modded one will have a look for ya.

    Hi hacktrix. The hardware ID is in the screenshot above. Also I didn't mod the nvmii.inf file but instead nvdmi.inf (for Dell/Alienware)

    Driver signature enforcement I think is disabled but I will check this is disabled at bootup to be on the safe side (win 7). Will have to wait to get the files. Essentially it was the latest driver from nvidia for 980M though.

    Got it to work :D

    Modded the nvdmi.inf this time replacing as follows everywhere

    NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.05AB.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M"

    with

    NVIDIA_DEV.1617.02A2.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M"

    Then I I disabled driver signature enforcement from bios although it still didnt stop the pop up and it worked.

    So far so good. In 30C+ ambient temps idle is around 42C. Will test further and have some fun with it.

    Thanks again!

    Now I need a modded vbios. GTA V with all the eye candy on max at 1080p except the "advanced graphics settings" sees frames rarely above 30fps. Temps top out at 60-63C.Is @Prema still active? I will happily send him a donation if he is and can unlock this card :)

    You can use the Maxwell VBIOS editor to make a modded bios. However personally I'd use MSI Afterburner to see if you can overcom the issue with an overclock as VBIOS editing and flashing can be very risky.
