So you’re mad at Dell for coming up with a better removable dGPU for their Precison workstations?

Why does this matter for MSI and Clevo fans?

This whole thread has gone off the rails. This is not an open discussion sub forum for MSI, Clevo, Alienware, Lenovo or even general MXM.

Please try to keep on topic relating to this particular Dell.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with this thread. There were some participants who said that Dell did the best it could do and there was no other way of doing it, that buyers should accept it and not doubt or raise any questions. Thankfully, some other participants came along and provided a lot of useful information to show that it was not necessarily the case. I do appreciate that a lot.

I can add that extra power cable. So what? I still wont be able to fit the damn thing. I'm pretty certain the better part of the MXM machines can't fit odd shapes, even with heavy modifications. How about that?

I never said that it is. It's the shape I was after all along, which IS part of the spec, hence I want a new module standard.

Yeah, it's not. You'll excuse me, but anything made after nVIDIA 9 series and maybe even including some 9 series machines ARE NOT MXM standard. You have said it already quite a few times - dropped standard. Then we move that this is the machine that can run the odd-shaped 1070 in question - "being the most powerful and robust 1070 MXM GPU chipset without a power connector". What if they have overbuilt it (the MoBo/MXM power delivery)? Actually forget the 1070, it can run THIS (the 1080 with core and VRM placement swapped, rated as 165W and I don't see a power connector there either)! I'm quite happy that you brought this very machine in here. If the 1070's design isn't enough of a proof for you, than the 1080's design should show you how inadequate the current MXM design is for anything more than 100W. Again I'm not saying anything about the slot, but then again there are pins for VGA and LVDS which are a waste of space with the current all digital output chips. And to return to the machine, the only proof would be if you show me a schematic that says 10A on the power line, because this is the spec. Yeah I know that we are hitting nerves here, but we are trying to prove the future of MXM as it is, if this post can't convince you, nothing can. Then again like it depends on us, so I'll show myself out.

Oh and I've seen this before and pretty certain that I've liked it, because it IS impressive, just WAY out of reach for most MXM machines for reasons stated above (overbuilt for specific requirements).

Some parts of your post I didn't understand.
However, the 1080 ebay link that you posted will not work on the Gt73VR/GT75VR. That "VRM/Core" swapped 1080 will only work on the 16L1. the "other" layout which is STILL different from the 1070 "almost MXM spec but with that stupid tab", is required for the GT73VR/GT75VR (and almost certainly the GT75 Titan 6 core, although I haven't looked). And even THAT one has the GPU shifted just enough so the 1070 heatsink won't fit on it, and the VRM layout for the 1070 heatsink (they are separate) also won't fit.

THIS card "might" actually fit in the MSI GT73VR's GTX 1070 heatsink and VRM sink configuration "Might." Assuming that weird TAB on the back allowed enough clearance to go in !

Not going to pay $833 to find out either. If I were rich I'd order it just for science.

Maybe yuu have a model created/designed before the graphics cards changed (odd shapes MXM graphics cards). Put it this way, if newer aka next graphics cards for each models doesn't change and we have the same MXM slots, you can see the picture:) Will be the same as we had before, only with the extra power connector and the odd shape cards. Nothing wrong with continue use of the pure MXM slot. Of course a new MXM slot/cards standard used for all OEM's have been better, but we ain't there. Not sure if we come there either. But soldered on BGA or weird graphics cards as used in Asus and now in the Dell model is a no go.

Why is this a no go? Dell made a removable graphics card for their Precision systems that they feel is better than MXM. Is the issue you have solely that you cannot interchange GPUs from Dell with Clevo and MSI now? Is the issue that Dell may have a performance edge now that they have started building their own cards for Precision?

Except you could actually upgrade it somewhat, ie D810 with Quadro FX 1400/Geforce Go 6800 GT or 7800 GTX, and M6500 with a M7820, 5000M or FX2700/2800/3700/3800M
