I like many of my friends that are entering college this year have been researching laptops. I visited the Dell Kiosk in my local mall and checked out the Inspiron 8600. I also looked at the X1000 from Compaq. Both of these computers seems like very capable computers, but which one is the better of the two when it comes to raw power and quality? I really need this computer to last me the four years of college.

Here are the two I checked out. both are customized and are equivalent in price ($1250)

    Compaq X1000

    1.5 Centrino
    512 Mb Ram
80 Gb 4200 RPm Hard Drive
    DVD/CDRW
    Intel ProWireless 2200 802.11b/g WLAN
    15.4 WSXGA+ (1680 by 1050)
    64MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
    8 Cell Lith/Ion

    OR THE DELL 8600

    1.6 ghz Centrino
    512 Mb Ram
    60Gb Hard Drive
    DVD/CDRW
    Intel Pro Wireless 2200 802.11b/g
    15.4 WSXGA+
64 MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX Go 5200 AGP
    72 Whr battery

How do these graphics cards compare, and/or do you have a better recommendation?

I like the component and build quality of the Compaq better. The PM in either will give you nice battery life, so that's good for a student. You're not going to lose with either one though.

As for GPU, they're both mid-range, I'd give the edge to the ATI, though that's somewhat subjective.

Here's another vote for the compaq, same reasons as brian, and the X1000 is a much much nicer looking machine.

    Hi MADA007,
If you really do need it to last 4 years(without sending in for service), then your chances are much better with the Compaq, that's for sure.

Thanks for the help. It seems the overwhelming majority (cough cough 100%) is behind the compaq. I know that HP and Compaq merged, but they still offer two different models of more or less the same computer. Compaq has the x1000 and Hp the zt3000. So which one do i buy?
